AS & SA Seals: The Versatile Choice for Mounted Bearing Units

AS Mounted Bearing Unit Seal
The AS seal creates a reliable barrier against contaminants and keeps grease securely inside the mounted bearing unit. Internal grease pressure pushes the sealing lip firmly against the shaft, ensuring dependable sealing performance during operation.
This design performs particularly well in non-abrasive environments where you want to protect your mounted bearing units from external contamination and reduce overall maintenance requirements.
Note on Regreasing: The AS mounted bearing unit seal prevents grease from passing through, meaning you cannot regrease the bearing through the seal itself. During initial greasing, leave the cap slightly open to allow trapped air to escape. Once the air has escaped, close the cap to complete the sealing arrangement.
SA Mounted bearing unit seal
The SA seal provides a reliable barrier that prevents external contaminants from entering the mounted bearing unit while allowing excess grease to purge safely. External pressure pushes the sealing lip against the shaft to block dust, dirt, and moisture, while internal grease pressure allows controlled flushing during regreasing.
This design is ideal for abrasive or harsh environments where regular regreasing is required to flush out potential contaminants and maximize the lifespan of your mounted bearing units.
Note on Regreasing: Unlike the AS design, the SA mounted bearing unit seal permits regreasing through the seal. New grease entering the bearing unit will push past the sealing lip, effectively purging old grease and contaminants away from the bearing.
Note – SA seal is not for food applications
The SA configuration can create a small recess around the sealing area where grease can collect and mix with contaminants. This may present a disadvantage in hygienic applications where clean and easily accessible surfaces are essential. For many other applications, however, this has little to no practical impact.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR INITIAL GREASING IF IT IS A PRESSURE-TIGHT BEARING UNIT
In some configurations, the bearing units from Extreme Bearing are bearing shaft seals pressure-tight. Therefore it is necessary to keep the cap a little bit open while you do the initial greasing. Otherwise problems like in the picture shown here can occur.
In addition, whenever it is necessary to add some more grease later, you should always take care not to create overpressure in the housing. The Extreme Bearing units are pressure-tight when used with the following configurations of seals: AS/AS, AS/VK, CL/CL and CL/VK.
Please inform your maintenance crew about this special service operating instruction. It could be helpful to dismount the grease nipples and exchange them with a standard stainless screw, so it will be impossible to make mistakes.
