WHAT IS AN EXTREME BEARING?

Extreme Bearing housings are made of stainless steel 316 with a double row of rollers and a special seal.

They are a better choice for applications where traditional bearings quickly become worn down by heavy load, rust, soiling, dust, chemicals and the penetration of water.

Extreme Bearings are designed for tough and wet corrosive environments involving heavy loads such as on conveyors, wash drums and graders in potato and seafood processing factories. Thanks to the excellent seals, Extreme Bearings are also very suitable in dry places where there is a lot of dust in combination with heavy bearing loads such as in mining and the extraction of sand on sorting equipment, conveyors and crushers.

WHY EXTREME BEARING?

EXTREME BEARING HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR THE FREQUENT MAINTENANCE OF BEARINGS

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. So even if the bearing insert itself is made of chrome steel or strong stainless steel, in many industrial applications the housing is frequently made of plastic or lower grade stainless steel (304).

These combinations are then usually sealed with plastic caps, with or without seals, in order to keep out contaminants. In practice, it has often been found that these systems are not adequate.

External factors such as moisture and alignment errors impact negatively on the bearing system requiring the premature replacement of parts.

Traditional bearing units all contain ball-bearing inserts fitted with a spherical outer ring. The idea is that the bearing is self-aligning. However, this is not always the case in practice.

What usually happens is that the force on the shaft holds the outer ring firmly in the bearing housing, making it impossible to move and adjust itself. The forces generated cause damage to the balls, inner ring and ball race. Ultimately the bearing unit has to be replaced.

AN EXTREME BEARING WITH A SHAFT

Extreme Bearings are designed in a different way.  Instead of a single row, an Extreme Bearing  has a double row of ball bearings or roller bearings depending on what you choose. The outer and inner rings are not exposed to force like in a traditional bearing because there is more freedom of movement and less friction.

BEARING ANGULAR MISALIGNMENT

During operation, the shaft ends will oscillate as a result of belt tension and it is necessary to achieve self-alignment without generating force in the bearing parts in order to ensure a long bearing working life.

BEARING INSERTS

Double-row ball bearings have the advantage that they are very light and adjustable.

The difference between the ball bearings and the spherical roller bearings in the Extreme Bearing is that the ball bearings are sealed by 2-rs bearing seals whereas the spherical roller bearings are not. These seals will give extra protection in case the housing's seals become broken or breached.

Spherical roller bearings have the advantage that they provide a much larger load capacity than ball bearings and can accommodate axial force.

ADAPTER SLEEVE

Clever fitting using an adapter sleeve does away with the need for an eccentric clamping ring or allen key, both of which have been known to cause additional problems. The choice of materials used contributes to a longer service life and, ultimately, better results and lower costs.

Standard Extreme Bearing housings feature centrifugal seals specially developed to repel dirt and contaminants using centrifugal force generated by the shaft.

The gaps between the lips of the centrifugal seal and the stator must be sealed to keep out dust and water. To improve bearing life for centrifugal shaft seals, use an automatic lubricator. 

Many sealing options are possible. Each possesses different properties depending on the application. We would be pleased to advise you on the best choice of seal.

CENTRIFUGAL SEALS AND LUBRICATION

SEALING WITHOUT CREATING WEAR ON THE SHAFT

Standard Extreme Bearing housings are made of 316 stainless steel. Specially developed centrifugal seals are also used.

The rubber of the rotor ring clamps around the shaft and is turning with the shaft vertically against the stator ring. Because the lips are positioned vertically against the stator ring, the dirt will be repelled by the centrifugal force from the sealing lips. The rotor ring can be moved eccentrically in relation to the stator ring. In this way, the centrifugal seal is able to absorb any misalignment of the shaft without creating wear on the rubber lips.

The grease passes the retaining edge through the lubrication channels under the stator ring and between the two sealing lips and stator ring. The grease ensures that any dirt is flushed away.

The clamping of the rubber rotor ring around the shaft means that the bearing can be assembled even on a shaft which has suffered light surface damage such as a groove.

LUBRICATION

Berulub FG-H-2-SL is highly recommended as the grease for lubricating Extreme Bearings. It is a high performance and food-safe lubricant.

Due to the low viscosity of the base oil, this grease is very suitable for use in the centrifugal seal. This smooth but tacky grease will make sure that all dirt is kept out of the seal. The high-load capability (four ball weld load >4000N acc. DIN 51 350 P4) makes this grease ideal for all types of Extreme Bearings. We supply the bearings but we do not supply lubricants. AXIAL DISPLACEMENT

SUITABLE FOR EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION OF THE SHAFT

LOCATING RING

The seats are machined to a tolerance to provide a loose fit.

The bearing seats in the housings are sufficiently wide to allow axial displacement of the bearing and to accommodate for thermal expansion of the shaft due to high temperatures, such as on a baking conveyor belt.

The Extreme Bearing blocks can absorb expansion of the shaft because there is an adjustment or locating ring in the bearing housing. The locating ring can be removed from a bearing block of a pair placed opposite each other so that axial displacement is possible.

IT TAKES MUSCLE TO HANDLE MUSSELS

FOR EXTREMELY HARSH CONDITIONS SUCH AS IN THE SHELLFISH INDUSTRY

Declumping is the mechanical process of separating mussels by tearing apart the mussel clumps. 

In an application like this, the extremely high specifications of the Extreme Bearing are what is required: durable bearing housing, rust resistant, water resistant, capacity to withstand heavy forces and axial force.

This is the industry for which the original Extreme Bearing was developed simply because ordinary bearings were wearing out too fast. In the Dutch seaside town of Yerseke where mussels are a big industry, experience shows that a normal bearing lasts three months whereas the Extreme Bearing lasts three years or more on average before it needs replacement.

FOOD ON THE MOVE

PERFECT FOR FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLE CONVEYOR BELTS

Extreme Bearings are, as the name implies, designed for use in harsh environments where relatively cheaper alternatives soon fail.These kinds of environments can be found in the food industry.

Typical conditions: 

  • Cleaning with a high pressure jet and aggressive chemicals
  • Heavy conveyor belts for fruit and vegetables.
  • Places where the metal is attacked by fruit juices.

Extreme Bearings provide a long working lifetime for applications in hard-to-reach places where maintenance needs to be reduced to a minimum.

  • Can carry 5 times more load than conventional bearings.
  • Triple sealing: both on the outside and the inside: 1, the oil seal; 2, grease packing and 3, the 2-rse bearing seal (Note that number 3 is only included with the ball bearing insert)

EXTREME BEARINGS COPE WITH CONDITIONS IN MUSSEL PROCESSING

Grit, sand and shells gather between the conveyor frame and the pillow block of the bearing. Add to this the constant presence of salt water around the bearing.

Thanks to the 316 stainless steel bearing and centrifugal seals, the Extreme Bearing has been running in this exposed position for many years without maintenance.

EXTREME BEARING USED ON SHRIMP PEELING MACHINE

LONG BENDING AXES, AXIAL FORCE AND HIGH SPEED


When conveyor belts to be tensioned over rollers with long thin axes as in a shrimp peeling machine, the roll will bend and thereby will hurtle the shaft ends. Extreme Bearing will absorb misalignment without generating force in the bearing. This ensures a long bearing working life.
